Feira, 19/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The General Affairs Council approved, Monday morning, the EU's "common strategy" for the Mediterranean region, before submitting it in the afternoon to the EU 15 Heads of State and Government, who will formally endorse it. No difficulties remain on this text, after the agreement of last Friday, in Brussels, between the fifteen (see EUROPE of 17 June, page 9). The last point to be resolved concerned the methods to come in the decision-making on the Middle East peace process (qualified majority or unanimity in Council). The fifteen finally agreed that the "common strategy" did not apply to the peace process as long as there was no global solution for the region, confirmed a Council representative. The EU contributions to a planning for the region continue, in the meantime, to be decided through unanimity of the EU 15.
