Feira, 19/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - Gathered, Monday morning, on the sidelines of the European Summit in Feira, the General Affairs Council adopted its new "common position" on European Union priorities towards Angola. The EU's main objective is "to support, in the framework of its Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) the initiatives capable of contributing to a political solution to the conflict in Angola, in co-operation with the United Nations and regional and sub-regional African organisations." The Fifteen say that they are ready to "help the Angolan government to rebuild the country in a democratic environment," "to fight against corruption and poverty" as well as to "improve the national economic and financial situation." If the Angolan government respects the aims set within the agreement concluded with the IMF. They could also take part in the mine clearance operations in the country.
The EU insists on the "organisation of free and fair legislative and presidential elections" and on the need to reintegrate within society the demobilised soldiers.
This "common position" will be re-examined in one year.
