First activity report by OLAF calls for better collaboration by Member States

Brussels, 14/06/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Anti-fraud Office (OLAF) adopted its first activity report, interesting for its calls for better co-operation by Member States and improvement to be brought to the Office's legislative framework, more for information on investigations, described in statistical and general terms. The report covers the activities of OLAF since its creation, the 1 June 1999, until 29 February 2000 and will be presented to the Ecofin Council on 17 July. EUROPE will return to this tomorrow.

In the meantime OLAF collaborates in the drafting of the European Commission report on the strategy of fighting against fraud, which should be adopted on 21 June. Moreover, the activity report will cover the information exchanges necessary to verify the authenticity of arrival and marketing certificates for Community products in Russia, problem that is notable for its implication in the Fléchard case. The agreement should be, according to OLAF, "quite rapidly" signed, probably after the summer.
