The British cement manufacturer BLUE CIRCLE, the target of a hostile bid by France's LAFARGE, is in talks with SOUTHDOWN, an American rival, regarding possibly taking the latter over. Should the operation come off, the merger of the two companies would give rise to a group valued at over £5 bn.
