Alexandria, 24/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - On the occasion of the meeting of the Presidents of the parliaments of the Euro-Mediterranean countries, in Alexandria this week, European Parliament President Nicole Fontaine launched an appeal for, "through the voice of our parliaments, our countries to unite their efforts to provide a strong political impetus" for peace in the Middle East. "We must seize the opportunity of this meeting to encourage our governments and the institutions of the Union to promote a robust re-launch of Euro-Mediterranean cooperation", said Mrs. Fontaine.
The President of the Lebanese Parliament, Nahib Berri, was not present, due to Israel's participation in the meeting, in which took part the presidents of the parliaments of Spain, Italy, France, Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria and representatives from Syria and Libya.
