Brussels, 23/05/2000 (Agence Europe) - On 22 May, the Portuguese Presidency made the following declaration on behalf of the EU:
"The EU followed with apprehension the latest developments in the political situation in Paraguay and firmly condemns all attempts to alter by force the constitutional order in the country The EU supports the President of the Republic, Luis González Macchi, and expresses its satisfaction that democratic order was rapidly restored, expecting that the country's institutions and people will continue to abide by the principles of constitutional democracy, political pluralism and respect for human rights.
The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the EU, the associated countries Cyprus, Malta and Turkey, and the EFTA countries, members of the EEA align themselves with this declaration."
