Raise the issue on a visit to India

Strasbourg, 20/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - In a resolution adopted at the end of the emergency debates Thursday afternoon, the EP once again urged India and Pakistan to create the conditions allowing for bilateral talks (with the international backing of the UN, if necessary) so as to reach a settlement to the dispute over Kashmir. Parliament calls on its Delegation for relations with the region to raise the issue on a trip to India, and on European Commissioner Chris Patten to do likewise "when formulating the EU's policy towards South East Asia". In addition, Parliament has instructed its Foreign Affairs Committee to draw up a report on the current situation in Jammu and Kashmir that, notably, "looks at the history of the problem" and says it is "persuaded that the EU has to undertake to contribute to economic recovery in the region, as soon as a peaceful solution to the Kashmir problem has been found".
