Brussels, 20/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - The spokesperson for competition in the European Commission confirmed on Monday that the Commission had just received the information requested of Microsoft on its new operating system "Window 2000". The American firm should send additional technical information by 15 April. The Commission will then take the time necessary to study the information.
Commissioner Mario Monti announced last month that he was asking for information over Window 2000, as the operating system for the server risked strengthening Microsoft's dominant position. Reserved for professional use on office and portable computers, Window 2000 could dominate the software market for networks and the Internet. It replaces the previous Microsoft system, Window NT, and is in competition with Unix, Linus and especially Solars of Sun Microsystem.
