Brussels, 13/03/2000 (Agence Europe) - With 183 seats out of 350, the Spanish People's Party (PP) headed by José Maria Aznar won the absolute majority of seats at the Spanish Congress during legislative elections this weekend in Spain. With 125 representatives elected, the Spanish Socialist Labour Party (PSOE) under Joaquim Alumunia lost 16 seats. Izquierda Unida falls from 21 to 8 seats. Other than the "Convergencia I Union" under the president of Catalonia, Jordi Pujol, most of the regional parties made headway: the Basque Nationalist Party went from 5 to 7 seats, the Coalicion Canaria obtains 4 seats, the Gallician national block has three deputies, the Partido Anadalucista wins 1 elected representative and Chunta Aragonesista also wins one. With 15 elected (as opposed to 16 in 1996), the Catalan formation under Jordi Pujol is the third largest political force in the country, but the PP's absolute majority allows it to govern without forming an alliance.
