Scientists call for more investment in high level information networks in Europe

Brussels, 17/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - The European Foundation for Science and the "Academiae Europae" have appealed for ongoing investment in Europe in the field of wide band electronic communications networks. A group of experts, set up by the two scientific institutions, has published a report whereby such high capacity networks, already widely developed in North America, greatly improve the way scientific research is carried out. According to a joint release, the two institutions consider that the problem of research in Europe is that its funding and academic investments are in the hands of national authorities. They recall the important date of May 2000 when the funding of TEN-155 Network (trans-European networks of 155bit/sec) will be concluded. They insist on the need to implement the successor of TEN-155, the GEANT network (multi gb/sec network).
