Brussels, 07/02/2000 (Agence Europe) - Ambassador Silvio Fagiolo became, on Monday, the new Permanent Representative for Italy with the European Union. He also represents Italy within the group which, under the chairmanship of Mr Seixas da Costa, is to prepare the ministerial sessions of the Intergovernmental Conference on institutional reform. He served under Foreign Minister Lamberto Dini as chef de cabinet.
Mr Fagiolo replaces Ambassador Luigi Cavalchini, who becomes chef de cabinet for Mr Dini. Mr Cavalchini last week said his farewells to the Committee of Permanent Representatives (that he chaired mainly at the time of negotiations on Agenda 2000). The president of Coreper, Ambassador Vasco Valente, as well as Deputy Secretary General Mr de Boissieu and Secretary General of the Commission Mr Trojan paid tribute to his European spirit and his ability to compromise on difficult issues.
