Brussels, 28/01/2000 (Agence Europe) - British Conservative Roy Perry MEP reacted strongly to the European commission's opinion on the forthcoming IGC, stating that "Labour MEPs must now distance themselves from Mr. Prodi's plans". In particular, Mr. Perry regards it "unthinkable that Britain would have no representatives amongst Europe's Commissioners", and considers that "Mr. Prodi seems to think that the President of the Commission should be the President of Europe rather than head of the EU's bureaucracy". Mr. Perry also accuses Mr. Prodi of reserving "the right to add to the IGC agenda as it moves along".
Another British Conservative MEP, Christopher Beazley, for his pat, says that the Commission should "not present changes to qualified majority voting as a fait accompli", especially regarding taxation matters. "Conservatives remain resolutely opposed to this", he said.
