MEPs from the EPP group call for European coordination network against racist and antisemitic content online

A European coordination network against racist and anti-Semitic content online was called for, at the initiative of the MEP Céline Imart (EPP, French), during an event organised on Thursday 9 July by the EPP Group on the responsibility of digital platforms in the face of the rise in online hate and extremism (see EUROPE 13897/31).

The main speakers included David Lega, Secretary General of the European Jewish Association (EJA) and a former MEP. Several MEPs, including Lukas Mandl (EPP, Austrian) and Antonio López-Istúriz (EPP, Spanish), also took part in the discussions.

Participants called on the European Commission to create a Coordination Network against Online Racism and Antisemitism (CNORA), a European mechanism designed to strengthen cooperation between Member States in monitoring and reporting online hate content.

Two priorities were highlighted. The first is to develop, in each Member State, a national platform for reporting illegal content, modelled on the French PHAROS system, which allows citizens to report racist, antisemitic or, more broadly, illegal content published on the internet.

The second aims to create a European mechanism linking these national platforms in order to facilitate information exchanges and strengthen the effectiveness of the fight against online hate speech. (Original version in French by Lionel Changeur)
