Brussels, 08/05/2026 (Agence Europe) – On the basis of the investigation tools at its disposal, the European Commission has concluded that “no serious security breach could be identified” in relation to the allegations relayed by the media, said Balazs Ujvari, spokesman for the European Union institution, on Friday 8 May. And “it is not possible to attribute individual responsibility or involvement”, he added. At the end of 2025, the Commission set up a working group to investigate allegations of attempts to recruit European officials of Hungarian nationality for the purposes of espionage and influence by the Hungarian Permanent Representation to the EU, headed at the time by the current European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi (see EUROPE 13729/27). This announcement reinforces the assumption that Mr Várhelyi will remain in office while Péter Magyar’s government is being formed in Hungary. (MB)
