On Friday 8 May, the European Commission published draft guidelines on the transparency obligations set out in the AI Act, and opened a public consultation to gather the views of stakeholders until 3 June, prior to their adoption.
Under EU rules, from 2 August, AI system providers will have to inform individuals when they are interacting with an AI system and apply machine-readable markings to enable the detection of content generated or manipulated by AI.
For their part, deployers will also have to inform individuals when they are exposed to deepfakes, AI-generated publications on issues of public interest, and emotion recognition or biometric categorisation systems.
These guidelines will be supplemented by a voluntary Code of practice, the final version of which is expected in June 2026, to help demonstrate compliance with the rules.
