The European Union recorded an agri-food trade surplus of €3.2 billion in January 2026, down 17% on the month but up 4% on the year, according to data published on Monday 13 April by the European Commission.
Agri-food exports from the EU totalled €17.5 billion, down 8% year-on-year, affected by lower volumes and prices in several major product categories.
Cereal exports were up by 6% (+€45 million), driven by an increase in volumes. Exports of fruit and nuts also rose - by 5% (+€31 million) - thanks in particular to increased shipments of apples and pears.
Imports of agri-food products into the EU fell sharply to €14.4 billion, down 11% year-on-year, due in particular to a drop in purchases of coffee, tea, cocoa and spices. According to the European Commission, the overall decline in trade mainly reflects an adjustment in world commodity prices.
