Christian Democrat group in European Parliament emerges stronger from European elections of 9 June

The Group of the European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) won the European elections of 6 to 9 June, according to the latest estimates published in the early hours of Monday 10 June. The EPP had 176 seats before the elections, or 24.9% of the total number of MEPs. With 184 seats out of 720, this proportion has risen to 25.56%.

The EPP had lost seats in the three previous elections (2009, 2014, 2019).

Germany will send 32 seats to the European Parliament (+2), Spain 22 (+9), and Poland 20 (+4).

The Spanish right won the European elections (with 22 seats in the European Parliament), ahead of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s Socialist Party (20 seats). “We are on the verge of a new political cycle”, said PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo on Sunday 9 June.

The Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, whose party won the European elections, claimed that his country offers a glimmer of hope for Europe, which contrasts with the terrible sadness in Paris. “Poland has shown that democracy, honesty and Europe triumph”, he added.

In Hungary, the EPP won 8 seats (+7). Manfred Weber, President of the EPP, said that if the EPP rules are respected, the elected representatives of the TISZA movement in Hungary, led by Péter Magyar, could have their place within the Christian Democrat group.

Once again, the EPP is the largest political group in the European Parliament”, commented Mr Weber, who has reached out to the S&D and Renew Europe groups to form a “pro-European democratic alliance(see EUROPE 13422/9).

He asked for the support of the other parties to ensure that the election result is respected and that Ursula von der Leyen is President of the European Commission for the next 5 years. Ms von der Leyen said she was “confident” about her election as head of the Commission, while admitting that there was still work to be done.

We must fight against those who want to destroy our Europe, added Mr Weber. “Together, with others, we will build a bulwark against the extremes of left and right”, added Ms von der Leyen.
