On Thursday 30 May, the spokesman for the European External Action Service condemned the conviction of pro-democracy politicians and activists under Hong Kong’s National Security Law in the case commonly known as ‘Hong Kong 47’.
The authorities had charged 47 people with ‘conspiracy to subvert’. They had taken part in unofficial primary elections organised by the pro-democracy opposition in 2020. Of the 16 defendants who pleaded ‘not guilty’, 14 have been convicted.
