On Thursday 11 January, the Energy Storage Coalition emphasised the need for the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) to tackle the persistent barriers to energy storage.
According to the coalition, the EU needs to double its energy storage capacity if it is to meet its climate targets by 2030, and it wants to encourage Member States to take greater account of storage in the final version of their NECP, due in June 2024.
It therefore encourages Member States to overcome barriers by carrying out a flexibility assessment, implementing a comprehensive energy storage strategy, tackling national barriers and maintaining a technology-neutral approach allowing the deployment of all available storage solutions.
According to the coalition, many NECP projects “overlook these simple steps”, hindering the development of energy storage for greater energy security and decarbonisation.
