European Commission consults on international AI guidelines to define EU position within G7

On Friday 13 October, the European Commission launched a stakeholder survey on the draft international guidelines for organisations developing advanced artificial intelligence (AI) systems. These principles had already been approved by the ministers of the G7 countries with a view to this consultation.

Generative AI brings opportunities, but also risks and challenges. And we must, as a matter of urgency, shape a framework for this technology at the global level”, said the Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Věra Jourová.

Based on the eleven draft guiding principles aimed at promoting the safety and reliability of AI, the G7 members intend to draw up a code of conduct that will provide guidance to organisations developing AI tools. A significant proportion of these draft principles, developed as part of the Hiroshima process, deal with generative AI systems or foundation models.

The consultation will be open to stakeholders until 20 October. The information received and collected should be used to define the EU’s position in the G7 process.

These rules stemming from the future code of conduct should complement those currently being negotiated by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU on AI legislation (see EUROPE 13263/15). (Original version in French by Thomas Mangin)
