03/02/2023 (Agence Europe) – A group of eleven organisations representing the entire biomethane value chain issued a joint statement on Wednesday 1 February calling for a binding EU-wide target for biomethane in the forthcoming Hydrogen and gas markets decarbonisation package. According to them, the EU should aim for an annual production of 35 bcm of biomethane by 2030, in line with the ambition announced by the European Commission in its ‘REPowerEU’ plan unveiled on 18 May 2022 (see EUROPE 12955/4). These organisations argue that such an objective would contribute to the security of energy supply while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in energy uses, waste management and agriculture. They believe that it could be filled in a sustainable way. Their statement comes just days before MEPs vote on the proposed regulation (see EUROPE 13109/6).
