09/09/2022 (Agence Europe) – Euro area finance ministers did not meet as the board of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) on Friday 9 September in Prague to decide between the two remaining candidates - Luxembourg’s Pierre Gramegna and Portugal’s João Leão - to replace Klaus Regling at the helm of the euro area’s permanent rescue fund from 7 October (see EUROPE 12990/31). Eurogroup President Paschal Donohoe said that discussions were continuing and announced his intention to convene the ESM board “shortly”. At this stage, Germany is reportedly blocking the appointment of the former Portuguese finance minister, while France and Italy are not convinced by the former Luxembourgish minister. (MB)
