ECDC and WHO Europe want to limit spread of monkeypox during summer events

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization’s European office (WHO Europe) want to prepare health authorities at national, regional and local levels to manage summer events in the context of the monkeypox epidemic.

ECDC and WHO Europe published a set of interim guidance and recommendations for their attention on Tuesday 14 June. According to the two organisations, large gatherings promote the spread of communicable diseases, but cancelling them can be counterproductive, as the events may move beyond the reach of public health authorities. ECDC and WHO Europe encourage dialogue between public health authorities and event organisers.

The document therefore provides advice for health authorities, organisers of large events and sex workers. The recommendations include raising awareness about the risks of monkeypox transmission, promoting hygiene and personal protection, engaging communities, and clearly communicating what to do if symptoms appear after an event.
