EU’s dependence on fossil gas imports remained high in 2021, according to Eurostat

20/04/2022 (Agence Europe)According to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday 19 April, the EU’s dependence on fossil gas imports stood at 83% in 2021, a decrease of only one percent compared to 2020. This slight decrease is explained by the fact that most EU countries used fossil gas stocks imported in previous years. Malta, Sweden and Lithuania - three countries that have increased their stocks - have the highest dependence on fossil gas imports, with 104, 102 and 101% respectively, in 2021. The share of fossil gas in the Swedish energy mix is very low (3%), as it is in Finland (7%) and Estonia (8%). On the other side of the spectrum, Romania recorded the lowest dependency rate (24%), followed by Denmark (26%) and the Netherlands (33%). See data: https://aeur.eu/f/1ae (DG)
