23/02/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 18 February, the European Commission opened a contribution period to align the rules of the Directive on specific stability requirements for passenger ships (2003/25) with the new standards introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in January 2020. These new standards aim to improve the safety of passengers on board ships, including ro-ro ships, after damage. In addition to increasing safety on board, the Commission’s initiative is intended to reduce the complexity and the technical and administrative constraints of the assessment, particularly as a result of the coexistence of two different models for assessing the survivability of ro-ro passenger ships after damage. In addition, the Commission also wishes to clarify certain definitions and eliminate provisions that are considered obsolete. The consultation is open until 15 April.
