19/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – In response to a request from Iran to the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism, more than 2.2 million Covid-19 vaccines for Afghan refugees in Iran reached their destination on 19 January, said the European Commission on the same day. Spain has provided the doses. The European Commission coordinated the shipment and financed 75% of the transport costs. Over the next few days, additional vaccines from Poland and Sweden are expected to be delivered to Iran. “The EU continues to support countries around the world in their efforts to provide Covid-19 vaccinations”, emphasised the Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarčič. To date, over 37 million doses from EU Member States have been delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism in response to requests that have been received. (AN)
