12/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – On Tuesday 11 January, the European Commission opened a contribution period to improve the certification scheme for train drivers in the EU. This harmonised certification allows train drivers, on the basis of minimum requirements, to easily change countries or railway undertakings within the EU. However, the Commission believes that there are still discrepancies in certification, both at national and railway undertaking level, due to “unclear and sometimes contradictory wording”. Furthermore, the Commission adds, the certification requirements for train drivers are, due to the emergence of new digital technologies and the new high-level skills needed, “outdated and no longer fit for purpose”.
