12/01/2022 (Agence Europe) – The Renew Europe Group called on Wednesday 12 January for a European Parliament board of inquiry into the misuse of Pegasus spyware in the EU, particularly against opposition politicians, lawyers and journalists. MEP Sophie in ’t Veld (the Netherlands) is one of the initiators of this request. “There are clear signs of abuse, of governments using it against the democratic opposition in their countries. The European Commission should follow the example of the US and quickly blacklist NSO, the parent company of Pegasus”, she comments. The Hungarian and Polish governments are among the countries using this spyware, possibly to infiltrate the activities of opposition politicians, as accused by NGOs and journalist groups. The other political groups in Parliament are invited to support the initiative. (SP)
