16/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to the European Green Deal on Tuesday, 16 March, during a conference on energy transition held in Berlin. “The European Green Deal is as important today as it has been before COVID-19. If anything, it has become even more important”, declared Mrs von der Leyen. She added, “After the pandemic, there can be no [...] return to economic activity based on fossil fuels”. Mentioning various initiatives that are part of the European Green Deal, the president notably reiterated the objective of equipping the EU with a renewable hydrogen production capacity of at least 40 GW by 2030. That same day, Paula Pinho—head of unit at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy—pointed out that, according to the information currently received from Member States, they have committed to producing more than 25 GW of renewable hydrogen by 2030.
