08/03/2021 (Agence Europe) – In a statement issued by its delegation and delegations of Member States in Dakar, the EU on Sunday 7 March called for restraint and dialogue following the violence that led to several deaths in Senegal during demonstrations following the arrest of MP and main opponent Ousmane Sonko on 3 March. He was released on bail on Monday 8 March. The same day, the army was deployed in Dakar. “We, as longstanding friends and partners of Senegal, observe with concern the incidents of violence we have witnessed in the country in recent days. We mourn the victims and express our condolences to their families and loved ones”, stressed the press release. And it added: “We call for restraint, avoidance of violence, protection of people and property and peaceful restoration of calm and dialogue”. (AN)
