Brussels, 02/12/2020 (Agence Europe) – By a very large majority (73 votes to six, with one abstention), MEPs on the European Parliament’s Committee on Environment gave the go-ahead, on Tuesday 1 December, for the opening of the final interinstitutional negotiations on the regulation establishing the LIFE programme, the only financial instrument specifically dedicated to the environment and climate action in the future 2021-2027 budget. In doing so, they supported their rapporteur, Fredrick Federley (Renew Europe, Sweden). This green light follows the political agreement reached on the figures for the EU budget 2021-2027 (see EUROPE 12603/15). All aspects of the programme other than budgetary aspects had been the subject of a “common understanding” between the EU Council and Parliament in April, under the Finnish Presidency, and the continuation of interinstitutional negotiations on the whole Regulation was subject to knowledge of the financial allocation for LIFE post-2020 (see EUROPE 12274/29).
