Greens/EFA Group in European Parliament calls on European Commission to make new proposal on post-2020 CAP

In a letter addressed on Wednesday 28 October to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the Greens/EFA group in the European Parliament asked the European Commission to table a new proposal on the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

The group, which voted against the texts amended by the European Parliament, called on the Commission to formulate a proposal that is “compatible” with the Paris climate agreement, the ‘European Green Deal’, and the ‘Farm to Fork’ and biodiversity strategies.

Last week, the EU Council and the European Parliament adopted “disastrous” positions on reform of the CAP, stated the letter, which was signed by Bas Eickhout and co-chairs Ska Keller and Philippe Lamberts (see EUROPE 12589/15)

Without serious action through the CAP, the goal of the EU’s Green Deal and its strategies are in jeopardy”, said the Greens/EFA group.

The European Commission has to respond” to take into account the new EU objectives for 2030: a 55% greenhouse gas reduction, 10% of the agricultural land dedicated to nature, a 50% pesticides and antibiotics reduction, and 20% less fertilisers.

The Commission’s old proposal (from May 2018) on the CAP “has become even more outdated than it already was”, the letter concludes.
