24/08/2020 (Agence Europe) – The first two GPS-III satellites in the US navigation programme have been successfully introduced into EGNOS, the European system for improving GPS accuracy, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) announced in a statement issued on Thursday 20 August. In 2020, the US system began to migrate to the new generation of more accurate GPS-III satellites. However, this switch from GPS-II to GPS-III had not yet been qualified by EGNOS, a situation which resulted in a deterioration in the quality of the signal, particularly for certain Finnish airports. The GSA has therefore developed a new step-by-step approach to accelerate the introduction of GPS-III into the EGNOS system by removing the initial qualification plan for GPS-III as part of the development of version 242B of the EGNOS system.
