On Monday, 3 August, the European Commission published the roadmaps for the forthcoming revisions of the European directives on renewable energy (2018/2001) and energy efficiency (2012/27), thus launching the first phase of public consultation.
“It is clear that every path to climate neutrality requires scaling up and accelerating the production of renewable energy, and reinforcing our action on energy efficiency”, stated EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson on this occasion.
Scheduled for June 2021, these revisions will specifically aim to adjust the European Union’s renewable energy and energy efficiency targets for 2030 so as to be in line with the new EU climate target that the Commission hopes to see adopted through the ‘Climate Law’—i.e., a 50% or 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
Currently, the target for renewables is to increase their share in the EU’s energy mix to at least 32%. For its part, Directive 2012/27 aims to improve energy efficiency by at least 32.5%.
Moreover, in 2020, the Commission will assess Member States’ National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) and present several strategies, including measures that may require a revision of the Renewable Energy Directive.
The public consultation for each of these revisions is open until 21 September.
