Six organisations representing the European “green-tech” sectors issued a joint statement on Monday 6 April calling on the European Union and national governments to direct the recovery plans announced in response to the economic impact of COVID-19 towards investments in a “sustainable society”.
“Our governments have the unique opportunity to adopt economic recovery packages that can dramatically boost the deployment of clean and sustainable technologies”, said Philippe Jacques, Director General of EMIRI.
According to these organisations, if, in the immediate future, all efforts should be focused on providing assistance to relieve health and social protection systems, governments should not see “post-COVID period” as the time to back off on climate change, but rather to further strengthen their commitments “to a sustainable and environmentally-friendly society”.
Claude Chanson, Managing Director of RECHARGE, added, “the long-term recovery plans for our economy [...] hold an unprecedented opportunity for the European Union to foster its climate leadership ambitions and to further invest in the infrastructure of a future-ready economy”.
