04/03/2020 (Agence Europe) – As the European Commission is due to unveil its action plan on fighting money laundering (see EUROPE 12434/2) on 25 March, the Renew Europe group in the European Parliament on Wednesday 4 March, added its voice to those calling for the creation of an EU body dedicated to this task. In a letter to Commission Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis, Dutch MEP Sophie in 't Veld and Spanish MEP Luis Garicano call for a "new EU body with an independent structure and direct supervisory power, able to impose fines and business restrictions on non-compliant firms". For Ms in 't Veld, the implementation of European legislation by the Member States is simply "pathetic", which is why a European supervisory authority is needed as well as greater harmonisation of rules.
