31/01/2020 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 31 January, the spokesperson for the European External Action Service urged all parties involved in the conflict in Yemen to show restraint “as a matter of urgency”, describing the recent intensification of the hostilities as “alarming”. “Continued military confrontation can only plunge Yemen further into conflict and inflict additional suffering on its people who are already heavily affected by the hostilities”, said the spokesperson. The spokesperson therefore called on the parties to de-escalate militarily and engage in confidence-building measures in view of resuming UN-led peace negotiations. The spokesperson reiterated that the EU will continue to fully support the efforts of the UN Special Envoy Martin Griffiths, “as he seeks to bring this war to an end and lay the ground for a sustainable peace”.
