Ratification of trade agreements with Hanoi, European Parliament remains divided on strategy to be adopted

A new debate on trade agreements with Vietnam – a free trade agreement (FTA) and an investment protection agreement (IPA) – confirmed divisions but also clarified expectations in the European Parliament’s Committee on International Trade on Wednesday 6 November (see EUROPE B12363A26).

While MEPs generally agreed that the human rights situation in Vietnam was largely unsatisfactory, they differ on how the EU could use this agreement to support the Asian country’s democratic reform...
