27/08/2019 (Agence Europe) – While the President-elect of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has begun her talks with the Commissioners appointed by the Member States (see other news), the leader of the German Social Democrats in the European Parliament, Jens Geier, is calling for real parity in the future College of European Commissioners. “The injustice of an unbalanced team must finally be repaired”, said the man who had voted against the election of his compatriot at the end of July in Strasbourg in a statement (see EUROPE 12297/1). According to him, during the hearings of the Commissioners-designate, the European Parliament and the President-elect “are by no means defenceless” against Member States' designations. He recalled that five women had sat on the ‘Prodi’ Commission, eight on the second ‘Barroso’ Commission and ten on the ‘Juncker’ Commission. (MB)
