As expected, the Middle East was the focus of discussions at the meeting on Tuesday 4 June in Brussels between the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, and the adviser to the US President, Jared Kushner.
According to the European Commission, during the meeting, Mr Kushner “presented his ideas”, and Ms Mogherini and Mr Juncker “underlined the fundamental interest of the European Union for lasting peace and stability in the Middle East region”. “The economic development of the entire region is crucial. It must be accompanied by viable political progress that takes into account both Palestinian and Israeli aspirations”, the Commission adds.
Mr Kushner is in charge of the American plan for the Middle East. This plan, the publication of which has been postponed several times, may be presented soon. Washington is expected to unveil the economic aspects of the plan at the Manama conference in Bahrain, organized by the United States on 25 and 26 June, which will take place without the Palestinians, who have decided to boycott it.
In addition, according to the Commission, Ms Mogherini, Mr Juncker and Mr Kushner also discussed EU-US trade relations. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
