06/05/2019 (Agence Europe) – The Commissioner for Enlargement Negotiations, Johannes Hahn, congratulated Stevo Pendarovski on his election as President of the Republic of North Macedonia on Sunday evening, May 5. A candidate in Prime Minister Zoran Zaev's coalition, he obtained nearly 52% of the votes, against just under 45% for his opponent, supported by the nationalist right, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkov. 46% of voters turned out at the polls. "I welcome further cooperation on the EU reform agenda given last year's Council conclusions paving the way for accession negotiations in June 2019", Hahn stressed via Twitter, recalling the EU's support. The OSCE Election Observation Mission described the second round as "calm and well-managed", while calling for the reform of the electoral code. (CG)
