Nigel Farage's Brexit Party could be the biggest winner in the European elections that will probably to be held in the United Kingdom on 23 May.
According to an opinion poll published on April 17 by Britain Elects, Mr Farage's Brexit Party is leading with 27% of intended votes, followed by Labour with 22%, the Tories (15%), the Greens (10%), the Lib Dems (9%), UKIP (7%) and 6% for the independent CHUK group.
This opinion poll does not match internal European Parliament projections, as disclosed in the Financial Times on 17 April, according to which Labour is ahead in the opinion polls and will be sending 28 British MEPs to Brussels and Strasbourg, compared with 17 for Mrs May's Tories, 5 for the Lib Dems and 5 for the Greens.
Nigel Farage's Brexit Party and new groups such as the independent anti-Brexit group, Change UK (CHUK), will be sending a total of 11 MEPs, according to the opinion poll in the Financial Times.
If the withdrawal agreement negotiated with the EU has not been ratified, British voters will have to vote on 23 May to send 73 elected representatives to the European Parliament, as is currently the case. The MEPs will be allowed to leave office as soon as the United Kingdom leaves the EU. The additional MEPs allocated to 14 Member States following updated calculations made in June 2018 by the European Parliament, and which excluded the United Kingdom, will then take up their roles as MEPs (the European Parliament will decrease in size from 751 to 705 MEPs).
