07/01/2019 (Agence Europe) – In response to the convening of the presidential election in the Comoros and the elections of the governors of the autonomous islands (Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli) on 24 March, the EU called for dialogue on 31 December to ensure credible elections. This electoral process “requires a calm environment that respects the rule of law and human rights, where the recent intimidation and arrests of opposition members have no place”, said the spokesperson of the European External Action Service. And to add: “Only appeasement and inclusive dialogue can help to overcome the current polarisation and create the conditions for transparent, credible and inclusive elections. The EU reiterates its support for the efforts of the African Union and stands ready to support regional initiatives for peace and stability in the Comoros". (AN)
