23/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – Three French magistrates responsible for the French part of the enquiry into Dieselgate expressed grievance in a letter dated end July. This was reported on by the French press early this week. Their complaint was about the lack of cooperation on the part of the German legal authorities and the German car maker, Volkswagen. In response to questions put by EUROPE, the European Commission said it was not its role to act as mediator given that the discussion was between national jurisdictions and therefore came within the national field of competence. The Commission will, however, be better equipped to play such a role once the new regulation on vehicle type-approval and surveillance is implemented in September 2020 (see EUROPE 11921), they said. Recently, the European institution revealed further emissions fraud in the context of the new WLTP type-approval tests (see EUROPE 12070). (PH)
