22/08/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Thursday 23 August, ambassadors from the Political and Security Committee are meeting to discuss the EunavforMed Sophia operation. According to one European source, they are also expected to reach an agreement at this meeting on the appointment of Rear Admiral Stefano Turchetto to the post of EU commander for the Sophia Operation. Mr Turchetto is expected to take over this post on 13 September from his fellow Italian national, Alberto Maffeis, who has been in this role since 14 December 2017. Another source explained that although the ambassadors are expected to discuss the strategic revision of the Sophia operation on 23 August, for the first time since 3 August (see EUROPE 12068), the debate will continue over the next few days. The subject may also be on the Defence Ministers' table during their informal meeting on 29 and 30 August in Vienna, explained this same source. (CG)
