09/07/2018 (Agence Europe) – On Monday 9 June, the EU expressed its solidarity with Japan, which has become a victim of deadly flooding and landslides in the west of the country. The heavy rains at the origin of this disaster have claimed at least 100 lives. "At this difficult time, the European Union stands in full solidarity with the people of and authorities of Japan. We express our condolences to all those who lost their loved ones", High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides stated in a joint press release. With search and rescue operations still ongoing, they add "the European Union stands ready to provide any assistance to our Japanese friends". (AN)
