Despite a stagnating situation, EU will not change stance towards Russia, warns Emmanuel Macron

29/06/2018 (Agence Europe)On Friday 29 June, after the European Council which agreed to renew economic sanctions against Russia for six months, France’s President Emmanuel Macron warned that the EU would not change its stance towards Russia.  “It is, and would be irresponsible and inconsistent if we were to consider that, given time, as the situation is not evolving, we shall forget our principles and defence of the interest of some of our member states such as the Baltic States and a few others”, he told the press.  “Our policy towards Russia is collectively assumed and is not the result of pressure from any member state”, he added.  The new Italian government and the Hungarian government would be inclined to better develop relations with Moscow (see EUROPE 12051).
