On Monday 12 March, the European Commission announced the adoption of a new programme worth €50 million which aims to improve the living conditions and resilience of vulnerable people in 24 Libyan towns situated mostly along the main migration routes.
Developed jointly between the European Commission and Italy, the new programme will improve the access of vulnerable people to basic social services, and will support local governance, especially in the Libyan towns most affected by migration flows, according to a press release from the Commission. More precisely, the programme will support the capacity of local public administrations and municipalities to supply basic services (health, education, water and sanitation) as well as social services, while improving timely and quality access to these services, the press release continues.
The programme will be implemented by the Italian Cooperation, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). It will be funded from the North Africa section of the emergency Trust Fund for Africa.
The EU has already committed €237 million through the Emergency Trust Fund for Africa to programmes aimed at resolving the problems in Libya. (Original version in French by Camille-Cerise Gessant)
