28/08/2017 (Agence Europe) – On Friday 25 August, the European Union welcomed the general election that took place on 23 August in Angola. This was the third general election since peace was restored in 2002. Whilst awaiting the final results, the European Union called for a peaceful conclusion to the electoral process “in full transparency”. The partial results published on 25 August indicate that the MPLA has gained a comfortable victory. A spokesperson for the European External Action Service (EEAS) stated, “The election marks an important moment of political transition in the country. Voters went to the polls in large numbers in a peaceful atmosphere, demonstrating their commitment to democracy. Moreover, this highly contested election was marked by an efficient organisation of the voting process”. The spokesperson calls for any potential complaints to be made through the appropriate legal channels. (AN)
