EU releases €200,000 in emergency aid for flood victims

Around 35,000 victims of some of the most serious floods and landslides experienced in Nepal for 15 years will benefit from €200,000 in an emergency humanitarian aid from the EU. The European Commission released this aid on Friday 25 August.

These resources will be provided by the Commission’s civil and humanitarian protection aid service (ECHO) and will help the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC), in collaboration with Nepal Red Cross Society, to deliver aid to the families most affected by this disaster that has devastated 31 districts in the country since July.

The assistance will help finance emergency aid equipment – food, drinking water, hygiene and purification products and emergency shelters, as well as help tackle waterborne diseases. Cash will also be distributed to these families to help them purchase provisions on the local markets once they are operational again, explained the Commission.

The south of the country has been particularly ravaged by the incessant rains that have triggered large-scale floods and landslides, displaced 91,400 families (461,000 people) and caused considerable damages: 65,000 homes have been destroyed and more than 120,000 damaged. A total of 1.7 million people have been affected by this disaster. (Original version in French by Aminata Niang)
